Fortnightly pay explained 2026/27

Fortnightly pay arrives every two weeks, rather than twice per calendar month. Use 26 payments as a standard annual budgeting conversion; twice-monthly pay uses 24 and produces a different amount per payment.

How does fortnightly pay work?

For weekly-based PAYE, a fortnightly payment normally covers two tax weeks. Under a cumulative tax code, tax calculations account for the relevant allowances and earlier earnings and tax in the year. National Insurance and student loans use the applicable earnings period and thresholds, so simply dividing annual deductions does not reproduce every payslip.

Depending on payday alignment, a tax year can contain a 27th fortnightly payday. HMRC calls the extra tax period week 54. Check your employer’s payroll calendar before treating annual salary divided by 26 as a guaranteed payment.

On £100,000 a year, the no-pension, no-loan estimate is £2,636.82 per fortnight. This uses England, Wales and Northern Ireland rates and annualised deductions.
