Daily pay explained 2026/27

A daily salary equivalent divides annual pay by an assumed number of paid working days. This guide uses 260 days: five days per week across 52 weeks. It is not a count of days actually worked or a contractor day-rate calculation.

How does daily pay work?

Being quoted a daily rate does not necessarily mean your employer runs daily payroll. Employees may receive their accumulated earnings weekly or monthly, and the tax and National Insurance treatment follows the relevant payroll rules. Paid holiday, unpaid gaps and the employment contract can change the annual income behind a quoted day rate.

The daily column spreads an annual PAYE estimate across 260 days for comparison. It does not deduct tax independently from each day’s earnings. Self-employed tax, umbrella-company fees, employer costs and IR35 assessments are outside this illustration; do not use the figure as a contractor’s expected cash payment.

On £100,000 a year, the no-pension, no-loan estimate is £263.68 per working day. This uses England, Wales and Northern Ireland rates and annualised deductions.
